Recently, we attempted to answer the question, “Do I need a Registry Cleaner?”
In the comments, we were challenged to review Registry Booster 2 [affiliate]. We already had an evaluation copy, so we decided to check it out.
The Windows registry is a central store for all system settings and options. It contains the information for all installed hardware, software, users, preferences, OS updates, etc. The registry is core to the operation of Windows. Invalid registry entries can cause system errors, crashes, and even refusal to boot.
Registry cleaners promise to clean up the entries left behind by uninstalled programs, remove errors in registry settings, and by doing so improve the performance and stability of a system. From the Registry Booster 2 website:
Have you noticed that the longer you have your computer, the slower it runs and the more it crashes? Often this phenomenon is caused by problems in the registry that accrue over time. Installing and uninstalling programs leave behind fragments – stray files, orphaned startup tasks, corrupted drivers. Over time the registry starts to get bogged down and conflicts emerge. Left unchecked, your system will become increasingly unstable, run more slowly and crash more frequently.
We decided to run tests using two different systems: a Windows Vista 32-bit desktop system with an Intel Core duo processor and 4GB of Ram; and a Windows XP Pro notebook with a Pentium mobile CPU and 1 GB of RAM.
First up is the Windows Vista desktop. This system is a test box that sees a lot of abuse. It’s seen MANY hardware changes, operating system changes, and had dozens of programs installed and uninstalled. If any system can benefit from a registry cleaner, it should be this one. We’ll be measuring boot time, shutdown time, and the time it takes to load Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Microsoft Word. Before making any modifications to the registry you should always backup. Registry Booster 2 has a registry backup feature. In addition to running this backup, we used ERUNT and created a System Restore point.
Registry Booster 2 has a nice looking, clean interface, and is simple to use:
After scanning, it reports 847 problems/errors found:
It took less than a minute to perform its cleaning:
Repair complete:
There’s also an option to defrag, which we did:
Registry Booster reported it found 847 errors, and repaired 835. Did it make any difference?
Windows Vista makes it easy to measure boot and shutdown times. Open the control panel, then Administrative tools, and finally the Event Viewer. In the Event Viewer tree select Applications and Services Logs, then Microsoft, Windows, Diagnostic-Performance, and Operational. Here we can find the boot and shutdown durations measured in milliseconds:
The system was booted five times. The high and the low times were tossed out, and the remaining three averaged. The results are shown below:
Boot time improved from an average of 73.517 seconds to 65.133 seconds, an improvement of 12.9%, or more than 8 seconds.
Even more impressive were the results noticed loading Photoshop. Load time improved from an average of 11.5 seconds, to 9 seconds. That’s a 27.8% improvement, or 3.5 seconds faster.
Microsoft Word showed some improvement, but since it loads on average in less than 5 seconds, it wasn’t significant. It was measured to start about .5 seconds faster.
Application loading times were measured with a plain old stop watch. The program was started five times. Again the high and lows were tossed out, and the remaining three times averaged. It should be noted the program start times were all measured after a system boot. With sufficient memory, Windows Vista will load programs significantly faster after they’ve been started once. There was no change in shutdown time.
Being skeptical of registry cleaners, we were surprised with the results. There was no denying the significant improvement in boot time, and loading time of some programs. Let’s see how the other system performs.
Next we tested the Windows XP notebook. This system hasn’t seen as much use. It hasn’t seen any changes to hardware and few changes to software. It doesn’t seem like such an obvious choice for a registry cleaner, and offers a good contrast to the first test system.
To measure boot times on Windows XP notebook we installed Microsoft bootvis. After each boot it provides a report including total boot time. We used the same method of booting five times, throwing out the high and low, and averaging the remaining three. Before Registry Booster the average boot time was 71.5 seconds. After Registry Booster it was 62.5 seconds.
Even though this system has seen far fewer changes over the life of the system, it still saw boot times improve by an impressive 14.4%, or 9 seconds. Unfortunately, we didn’t have Photoshop installed on this system. Microsoft Word was installed, and again saw just a minimal improvement of about .5 seconds. There was again no change in shutdown time.
Other Registry Booster 2 claims of reducing crashes, and improved system stability are more difficult, if not impossible to test. Neither of these systems were suffering from any crashes or stability problems. We debated introducing some errors into the registry to see if they were fixed, but decided it would be far from a real-world test, and opted against it. We did run each system for a couple of weeks after running Registry Booster. Neither system exhibited any new errors or crashes, which has been a problem reported with some other registry cleaners.
We began this test skeptical of registry cleaners in general. Computer support forums such as ours often have topics from people that have had bad experiences. However, if your expectations are realistic, we would have no problem recommending Uniblue’s Registry Booster 2. It’s easy to use, has a nice interface, and takes only a few minutes. It will provide improvements in boot times, and application loading times. It will not be able to cure every system crash, or stability issue. Maybe most importantly, it doesn’t create any new problems. If you’re in the market for a registry cleaner, Registry Booster 2 is a good choice. Click here to download, and run a free scan.
Please comment and share your experiences with Registry Booster, or other registry cleaners.

2It improved the performance noticeably on a XP notebook. I’ve used this program for more than six months and have not any unsuspected errors,
if you use it at least once a week. Combined with Speed Up My PC, it does
work!

3Very objective review. The Uniblue suite have always measured up to expectation. I have both SpeedUpMyPC and RegistryBooster and I’ve tried quite a few others…
Irrespective of what the “gurus” say, I’ve always experienced improved speed after using a register cleaner like RegCure and even RegistryBooster. So I will always recommend them.

5Uniblue registry booster 2 is a cool software.
It works better than c cleaner.
C cleaner is really good for the recycle bin.

6Here are some interesting stats about registry cleaners, particularily Uniblue Registry Booster 2 (RB2).
I loaded the trial version it told me I had 514 errors.
I have three other Regsistry programmes, so decided to run these alternately with Registry Booster 2. Each time noting the errors and repairing errors for all other programmes except the trialed RB2 as that only repairs 15 until purchased.
These are the results: ERRORS CLEANER
Step 1 514 RB2
Step2 242 R Mechanic
Step 3 496 RB2
Step 4 260 Reg Cure
Step 5 454 RB2
Step 6 86 Registry Fix
Step 7 454 RB2
Step 8 61 Reg Cure
Step 10 454 RB2
Step 11 78 Registry Fix
Step 11 Uninstalled then re-installed RB2
Step 12 419 RB2
So exactly what does RB2 do, or any other Registry Cleaner for that matter? What is an error, why do cleaners not recognise the same errors? Cynically, when running a trial does it just selesct a number to scare/ impress between 1- 1,000 and to tell you that you have a problem? Why does it still say 496 errors after Registry Mechanic has repaired 242 (step 2 above).
Your thoughts are welcome.
Thank you.

9I purchased a license for Registry Booster 2. I didn’t find that it made enough difference to warrant the $30 license fee. I also purchased UniBlue’s SpeedUpMyPC. It removed all my cookies, saved passwords, etc., but I still didn’t see much difference, in spite of its claim to have fixed many, many problems.
When I asked UniBlue for the refund (as promised) they never sent me the Letter of Destruction E-mail to certify my removal of the product; never processed my refund; and would not ever reply to any of my followup e-mails asking about it.
I advise that you avoid UniBlue. It cost me $60 to learn that. I’m telling YOU for free.

11I have already bought Uniblue powersuite (registry booster 2 , speedupmypc 3 and spy eraser 2) I think registry booster is not the best registry cleaner . Best registry cleaner is “Registry Easy” and “Registry Mechanic”. The latest versions of these two have much improvements . And i would like to tell that on my PC , registry booster found +350 errors but fixed 0 !

13Hi there,
I’m Hilary from Uniblue. Death – I can assure you that RegistryBooster is not a fake program. Did you contact our Technical support Desk? Here’s the link and they will get back to you: http://www.uniblue.com/support/ticket/
RegistryBooster implores you to take a back up of your Registry before attempting to run any fixes – you are prompted to do so by the program.
Also, could Jerry Krantman please contact me – we have tracked the history of your order, and we sent you a letter of destruction in May, to which you didn’t respond, therefore we couldn’t process the refund. My email is hilaryr@uniblue.net.
Could RosaMaria Castaner please also get in touch with me?
If anyone has any other queries etc., please drop me a line.
Regards
Hilary

14I’ve used PowerSuite for some time, including RegistryBooster, DriverScanner, and SpeedUpMyPC. It found and fixed a large number of problems. It changed an unstable system (lots of blue screen errors) to a stable and faster system. No more blue screen errors. For some reason, SpeedUpMyPC stopped working when XP Service Pack 3 was pushed out. Prompt and polite response from tech support, with a correct solution.

16I have just bought powersuite, cannot tell a lot so far,but the first thing I ‘ve noticed that driverscan stopped working after couple times. It crashes at the beginning. It could be something to do with registry cleaner which cleaned out some registry entries which infact are necessary for program to run.I’ve tried to reinstall the whole thing, but it’s not working anyway.Could you please advise on this.Thank you.

18I’ve used The PowerSuite on and off for some time. I’ve always enjoyed it’s clean and simple layout.
It would be useful to have the programs critically compared to similar products in a controlled and professional format.
Subjectively, the products do seem to work nicely. As good as others? Beats me. Things like registry cleaners and anit-spyware utilities consider different things “bad.” You never get the same results with two different programs. You run two different anti-virus or anti-spyware programs back to back, they all show different things. You use one to fix everything, and the other will pick up some stuff. Heck, if you run one twice in a row, sometimes it picks up new things. Many times you double or triple up a defense if you are heavily concerned about such things. If you don’t think SpyEraser doesn’t work well enough, run Spybod Search & Destroy and Spyware Doctor too. Heck, throw in Hyjack this while you’re at it.
For me, Uniblue has built a decent enough system of products that are simple and elegant to use and that are light on the resources. I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple more products from them as well like an anti-virus and a whole-disk defrag.
Small suggestions since Hilary is listening,
1) allow a “hide” option for all the tray items. Only SpeedUpMyPC has this but none of the others. Why not?
2) since it is packaged as a “Suite,” it would be nice for the Suite to act more as one package instead of simply a startup shortcut to the bundled software. It would be nice to have the Suite presented as one comprehensive device rather than simply a link to the 3 separate pieces. It’s not much more than a splash screen with 3 links on it. It would be nice to have the Suite feel like “the” program and all 3 would be integrated within it. It’s not a major thing, but it seems goofy to have the “Suite” part since it’s pretty much just a pretty copy of the Start menu Programs links.

19I used Registry Booster and I along with Death have had quite a bit of trouble with it. I can’t open many programs that I previously used and can’t seem to reinstall them either. It’s extremely frustrating because I run a small business and haven’t been able to do anything I need to do on the computer because it seems like new problems pop up every day with my programs! I have contacted tech support and am waiting for a reply. I would like some help restoring my pc or at least get my money back.

20First, good response by Hilary Rogers, nice damage control, also I too ran Registry boost only to have some network services fail. I did take a backup and was able to restore the old copy and things started working again, now this being said, I could not identify which registry entry caused the problem. I have not contacted support which I should have done but, the restore does work. What I find with the products (I run both registry boost and speed up my PC) is that they took up a ton of resources when running so, I only turn them on when I want to clean the registry or the temp internet files. Just my two cents.

21How to uninstall
Gary
November 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
22I downloaded the free scan of Uniblue Registry Booster2. It found errors and removed the allowed number per trial. The I tried to uninstall the program and had a difficult time doing so. I had to go into program files and remove manually; some folders I had to drag onto my desktop before I could delete. I am still finding traces of the program on my hard drive, the latest being here: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Uniblue\Registry Booster2.
I am also looking at RegCure. The free scan found an alarming 1,137 errors, is that for real?

23I have both Registry Booster 2 and Spyware Eraser.
What I cannot get an answer to (from UNIBLUE or anywhere else) is WHY the user interface will not allow me to perform the advertised actions of Liveupdate and Undate now. Firewall turned off makes no difference.
Lask of easy update makes the products very much less useful; the only suggestion (from UNIBLUE) is to downlaod and manipulate database.zip files, not easy for the inexperienced.
Uniblue needs to perfact this interface problem before I give them more than 5/10.

28I have Registry Booster 2 installed on 2 PCs. One is Windows XP Media Center, SP3 desktop and the other is an HP laptop with Vista Home Premium. I first used it about 5 months ago on the XP machine. In addition to the somewhat improved boot times and much faster load times for non-Microsoft products (all pretty substantial), the number of system slowdowns and app lockups when I have probably too many applications open is amazingly reduced. The XP machine is a cripple anyway, it is a 2-1/2 year-old HP Celeron 1.7 Ghz with 1 GB of RAM, and it improved enough that I bought RB-2 for the dual-core Vista machine. The Vista laptop had come with only 1 GB (bad joke after Vista SPs were installed). Even after doubling the RAM (max on this motherboard), it was sluggish. After using RB-2 it runs really well. I run RB-2 about weekly on both PCs and it cleans up a fair amount of trash on machines that are used for everything from photo editing to WP and music editing and production.
I also periodically run the registry defrag function, but can’t really tell what the results are.
I have had no problems with the product.
Absolutely worth the money. I have postponed replacing the XP machine because it now runs so well. This is good as I don’t see the point of Vista.

31Uniblue has forever changed my high end gaming pc for the worst!! My pc is over a year old and runs 24/7, has never locked up or crashed, untill……. I made the mistake of installing this worthless crap! After one hour of having Uniblue installed my pc froze and crashed over six times, Started having issues with explorer and alot of programs dont look right. come to find out it had installed wrong drivers. ASAP i uninstalled the software (or at least tried to) and did multiple system restores, nothing worked. I then manually updated all drivers to the correct ones, and again tried to uninstall uniblue. Finally thought I had recovered myself from a huge mistake…WRONG! No more crashes but, pc dont run the same anymore, virus scans still pick up somthing from uniblue, and pc is no faster than before. I have repeatedly tryied to contact Unible without success. They do not return emails and the contact numbers are bogus. ITS A SCAM!! DONT MESS WITH YOUR REGISTRY! It will do more harm than good uness you are a pc expert and can modify your registery manually (which is the best and only way)!!!!!! I am now 40$ poorer lol

42I have bought Uniblue 2009, too. It doesn’t seem to apply the correct ways of repairing registry. It simply removes the unused/rarely used registry of my drivers and other programs along with bad registry. I did not notice it at first, but now I realize that many of my drivers and programs are not working anymore.
I am not against Uniblue, and it actually improve my PC performance. However, Uniblue may need to find a better way of defining bad registry. It should also warn its users about removing unknown registry.

47success in getting rid of Uniblue Registry Booster 2009
by johnjohnson1957 – 11/19/08 11:15 PM In reply to: Hard to remove by Cat5 Cane
While working a separate issue with Microsoft tech support today I asked the about Uniblue Registry Booster 2009. When I said I could not get rid of it he asked me to confirmed that I wanted it gone and then downloaded a program called “Your Uninstaller.” It easily identified the file and cleaned it out. “Your Uninstaller” also identfied a number of programs that the Control Panel’s Add/Delete program option completely overlooks.
I found this on CNET, topic, “PC utilities: Best registry cleaner?”
Don’t know if it’s of any value but it might be.

50I just want you all to know tha I amand have been a tech for over 5 years and Registry cleaners are all a scam. You might thin they work but in truth can the average computer user tell you what the registry really does? how many people can even locate the registry on their computers? Registry cleaners are a 100% scam they may appear to work at first but eventually there will be a program that doesnt work because the registry cleaner removed essential entries to allow that program to run. Stay awayfrom registry cleaners they are bad news…

52So it improves boot time by 8 seconds, allegedly.
Start those graph scales from zero and they wouldn’t be so misleading.
I’m trying to think of something I could be doing for those extra 8 seconds but let’s look at the bigger picture.
I boot my pc once, maybe twice a day.
Let’s say twice.
Thats 365 days a year x 2 = 730 times a year.
Times 8 seconds is 5840 seconds or just over 1.5 hours.
A year.
1.5 hours a year.
Keep your money in your pocket. Don’t waste it on stuff like this.

This supports Windows 7.
I used the same license key I used for RegisterBooster 2 and it registered fine. It would have been cruel for UniBlue to force you to pay for the software again!

56I too, purchased Register Booster 2, (I still have the invoice) and when I entered the serial number I was given, which has to start with RB and mine does, I received an invalid serial number message, so they are not wonderful as some people make out.
I refuse to pay another ?19 in less than two years !

57I used this program because it was offered wit an AVG update. Must be kosher I thought. Used it and immediately started having problems. In particular firefox would just shut down after 2 or 3 moves. This program would not go away even after using system restore to 2 weeks before installation neither did it show up on the programs list to delete. Firefox just kept on falling over despite reinstalling. after 2 hours I managed to kill it and reinstall firefox successfully. Never going there again!

58My PC is almost 5 yrs old , the only thing I run on it for protection and cleaning are AVG free edition, Malwarebytes, and CCleaner and I must say I have not had any problems with this PC and Im on it 10 to 12 hours everyday. My motto is , if what Im using is doing the job , why experiment with anything else, just because you have to pay for it don’t necessarily mean it’s better. I have been tempted at times to try others but after research and reading forums I always go back to my original three and always very happy that I did.

59What can I say? After trying it, it crashed my machine continuously. I cannot recommend this. By the way, such things should be built into stupid Windows from the beginning.
